You can't have a coastal city without a strong representation of ice creameries. Sydney has these in spades—in fact, it is here that you'll find some of the best in the world. So grab a cone, fill it up and get sticky with everyone's summertime favourite.
It might look like a quaint corner store, but inside is a rainbow of iced confectionaries that have taken out numerous international awards. In 2014, this family-run gelato and coffee bar took out the Gelato World Tour title in Italy. The secret was, well... secret. Flavours are churned in-house daily using guarded recipes that run the gamut from traditional to experimental, from chocolate to strawberry balsamic.
There's nothing showy about the shopfront, but Ciccone & Sons is another Sydney venue elevating ice cream from simple childhood treat into a dessert to be taken seriously. Co-owners and master gelato-makers Mark Megahey and Sean O'Brien make flavours from scratch using whole Jersey milk to give an extra creamy texture without being overly sweet. Classic flavours mix with weekly specials such as salted cashew and spekulaas.
If you want a side of theatre with your waffle cone, Aqua S is the place to go. Specialising in Japanese-style soft serve, the servings are piled high and come in complementary flavour duets which twist around each other in dreamlike swirls in the cone. The staple flavour is sea salt, which could be paired with anything from raspberries and cream to honeydew melon. To top it off, add a voluminous cloud of fairy floss.
