Understanding Taliesin West’s History and Significance

Established in 1937, Taliesin West is a National Historic Landmark nestled in the desert foothills of Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountains. It was built and maintained almost entirely by Wright and his apprentices, making it among the most personal of the architect’s creations. It is a place where Frank Lloyd Wright experimented, innovated, designed masterpieces and changed the world.

In his lifetime, Wright designed more than 1,000 original and innovative structures, including homes, offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels and museums. He often designed interior elements for these buildings as well including furniture and stained glass.

Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and the environment. He was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time."

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, established in 1940 by Wright and his wife, Olgivanna, ensures Taliesin West retains Wright’s original intentions of housing experimental laboratories of innovation.

Over the last year, the foundation has worked to evolve its vision, making Wright’s legacy more accessible and encouraging new audiences to experience his vision. The foundation is now focused on developing more public programs to engage the public through preservation, education, and innovation initiatives.
