How to Stay Cool While Looking Hot in Orlando

Tips, Tricks and Best Practices for Keeping Your Cool and Looking Fabulous While Touring Orlando's Attractions

Have you been to Florida in the summer? Here’s a newsflash: it’s HOT.

But just because the heat and humidity are soaring, that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your fashion sense, and make the most of the stickiest of situations.

We asked local influencers for some great heat-taming options, with a few essentials from Where Orlando staff as well. For more great tips, be sure to follow our beauty experts on Instagram. You’ll find their handles in the story below. You can also click on their names to read more about them in our story about Orlando influencers that you should know.

Around Town

Being Prepared is in the Bag. It may be tempting to forgo a bag when heading out for a day of fun, but we prefer to find options that are stylish and comfortable, with room for everything you need to make your day perfect.

When it comes to making a splash with your bag, Vera Bradley has what it takes. Totes and backpacks feature tons of pockets for keeping you organized in a host of colors and designs to ensure you stand out in a crowd. Pictured are bags in the Butterfly Flutter pattern.

But for functionality, nothing beats a backpack purse, and the Aimee Kestenberg Tamitha backpack is a top pick for Where Orlando’s Digital Director, Ashelyn Vazquez. “The exposed zipper doubles as a fashion statement and a security measure; there is a magnet at the top that snaps on the backside of the backpack,” she says. It’s durable, too. “The leather is supple and easy to clean, and the straps are adjustable for whatever look you have in mind.”

A Swim Tee You’ll Love. Whether lounging by the pool or trekking through the parks, Lands’ End’s Long-sleeved Swim Tee is a must for Editor Brooke Fehr. “The fabric is light, dries quickly, and is UPF 50. Plus, it’s adorable with crops and a jacket for evening. I seriously never wear anything else to the theme parks or the beach.”

Super Cute Sunnies. Good sunglasses are essential in The Sunshine State, and Mattia Joyce Castellano (@Mattia_Joyce) suggests Eyebobs. “They have high quality polarized lenses, are glare-free and have 100% UV protection.”

A Hat with Superpowers. Mattia also recommends a hat with a wide brim to keep the sun’s rays at bay. “What better hat to have than a sun hat? This Wallaroo Scrunchie Hat is one of my favorites, and it is UPF 50+ fabric, which blocks 97.5% of ultraviolet rays.” It’s also crushable, which makes it easy to pack in the tiniest carry-on.

A Magic Towel. Dock & Bay Microfiber Towels “feel different, dry great.” The thin towels (pictured in our opening image) dry three times faster than conventional terry cloth, and the lightweight fabric makes them a dream to pack.

Pucker Protection. Sun protection shouldn’t stop at your lip line. Be sure to carry lip balm with SPF, and reapply often. We love Mint Lip Balm from Grove Collaborative for its refreshing scent and tingly feel. (No. Seriously. We. Love. It.) Olive oil makes it extra moisturizing.

Just in Case Swimwear. In Florida, you should literally never leave home without a swimsuit. Ashelyn loves the classic lines and versatility of this Old Navy Bikini, which pairs perfectly with cutoffs, sneakers and a boyfriend shirt.

Double Duty Sunscreen. Origins’ Ginzing SPF 40, Energy-Boosting Tinted Moisturizer is a multitasker. Says Mattia: “This tinted moisturizer is my absolute favorite because it gives me a glowing bronze look and it also protects my skin from the sun.”

On the Go

Well Heeled. You can log some serious step tallies in O-Town, and Chelsea Watson (@styledbymagic) loves Vionic shoes for touring. “Hattie Sneakers are extremely comfortable and perfect for long days soaking up all the magic at the theme parks.”

Tame the Mane. When it comes to frizz, the struggle is real. And Shelby Revis (@ShelbyRevis) has the answer: Living Proof’s No-Frizz Humidity Shield. “No more frizz! I love using this product to combat Florida’s intense humidity.”

Snack Savvy. You’ll always find stylish and practical Grove Collaborative reusable zip bags in Ashelyn’s backpack. They’re perfect for keeping healthy snacks at the ready and cutting down on plastic waste. But they also come in handy for packing everything from makeup and toiletries to jewelry and accessories.

Refresh in a Flash. Chelsea also likes to keep a misting spray in her bag. “My favorite face mists include Rinse’s Peppermint Refreshing Spray, which works double-time as a toner before makeup and a cooling spray that’s great for spritzing your whole body when you need a little refresh.”

Ready for Anything. Don’t get caught in a downpour. “Afternoon showers are inevitable. I’m always prepared with a packable rain jacket,” Shelby says. She loves the Golightly Waterproof Jacket by Joules for its stunning array of prints and packability.

Make Your Own Weather. “One thing I can’t recommend enough is a battery operated, rechargeable fan,” shares Chelsea. “Get one. You can thank me later.”

Touch Up on the Go. Shelby also never leaves home without oil blotting papers. “They’re perfect for touch ups on the go.”

Water, Water Everywhere. Nomader’s collapsible water bottle is perfect for packing and pulling out just when you need it.

72 Million Visitors, You Say? Got hand sanitizer? You should. We love this one from Rinse for its natural ingredients and great scent -- and no drying alcohol.
