Restaurateurs Tony Esnault and Yassmin Sarmadi, best known for their French bistro Church & State in downtown Los Angeles, launch chic Knife Pleat on the Penthouse level of South Coast Plaza. Esnault was executive chef at Michelin-spangled chef Alain Ducasse's Essex House in New York and at Joachim Splichal's Patina in L.A. His new spot in Costa Mesa is in the space formerly occupied by Marché Moderne. The facade mixes onyx, brass and translucent glass; inside are an alabaster chandelier, soaring soffits and an expansive skylight above sculptural settees, and a white Calacatta marble bar. Elevated French fare fits right in with boutique neighbors such as Christian Louboutin and Louis Vuitton; pasta and risotto, and a wood-burning stove, expand the menu's horizons.
