This sweet Southern town, one of the oldest towns in Middle Tennessee, is just 20 minutes south of Nashville. History buffs should visit the historic Carter House, site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War; attractions include Carnton Plantation, which served as the main Confederate field hospital for soldiers, and the nearby cemetery, where the 1,500 men who died in battle are buried. Franklin’s Main Street is an adorable place to walk and shop, where Starbucks and Ben & Jerry’s share space with antique shops, specialty stores, art galleries and restaurants. Walking and trolley tours are an informative way to get acquainted with the past, with a few good ghost stories thrown in for good measure. And keep an eye out for celebrities—loads of country music stars have homes in the area.
