Exploring the Artsy Side of the Magic City

Miami's brilliance in culture, art and history on display at its varied museums.

The Magic City gets its reputation as a party town thanks to South Beach, but locals know there's so much more to offer than that—it's also a place that appreciates art and culture. We’ve got plenty of that, with a number of different museums showcasing all kinds of exhibits that will fill up your day.

Perez Art Museum Miami

This impressive art museum opened last December in the middle of Art Basel to much fanfare. Named after local developer and art collector, Jorge Perez, the museum is home to portraits dating back from the last century to more modern, contemporary sculpture pieces that will have you cocking your head in query. For kids and teens, the Perez Art Museum hosts a number of special events throughout the month, so there’s definitely something for everybody at this spot in downtown Miami. Don't forget to grab a bite at Verde before you leave. 1103 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami, 305.375.3000

HistoryMiami

This place is all about preserving Miami’s history and culture while also looking to the future. Staff frequently host walks through different points of interest, such as South Beach’s Art Deco buildings or Wynwood’s funky art scene, giving a history of the area and explaining what makes the neighborhood as special as it is. In the HistoryMiami museum itself, exhibits such as the current “American Sabor” showcases art from the different cultures that call Miami home, as well as sharing how Miami became the city it is today. 101 W. Kids can climb Mount MiChiMu rock wall, visit the music studio to learn more about instruments from around the world, walk through a 6-foot piggy bank, design money at the bank or shop at the supermarket.
