Roger Kemp: Visionary Modernist
From pastel fields of bending trees to dense canvases of deep colour, reminiscent of stained glass windows, the career of the late artist Roger Kemp—widely considered one of Australiaʼs great innovators in the field of abstract art—saw many shifts of focus and progressions into complexity. The “Roger Kemp: Visionary Modernist” exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria is the most comprehensive retrospective of the artistʼs work to date, following his career from his earliest symbolic landscapes and angular dancing figures, through to later works where emotional intensity is conveyed through heightened geometric abstraction.
