Polixeni Papapetrou: Olympia
The late Polixeni Papapetrou (1961–2018) was a towering figure in Australian contemporary photography. With a career spanning 20 years of practice, her career is often delineated into two eras: before her children were born, and after. The earlier years of her practice centre around carefully constructed, stage-managed worlds of masks and disguise. With the birth of Olympia, the photographs become more playful and imaginative. “Olympia” at National Gallery of Victoria—the first major retrospective of Papapetrou’s work in a museum setting—explores this complex relationship between model and muse while celebrating one of photography’s greats.
