We spoke to Toby Lier, chief concierge from Pan Pacific Melbourne, and got his great tips and advice for exploring Melbourne.
Where is the best place to watch a sunset over Melbourne?
Lui Bar at Vue De Monde at the Rialto would be the best spot. Grab a cocktail and watch the sun go down in Melbourne and the lights go up. Itʼs a great place to start your night as well. Another spot would be Arbory Afloat next to Flinders Street Station for relaxing and enjoying after-work drinks.
What dish is a staple in the city and where can we get it?
While there are many great burger bars around Melbourne, you just can’t go past Grand Trailer Park Taverna and their McDowell burger. If you can manage to get a table, the iconic meat fruit dish at Dinner by Heston is simply delicious, and a personal favourite of mine is the veal ragu at local institution Il Solito Posto.
Melbourne has a plethora of hidden bars, what’s your ultimate pick?
Bar Americano is a leading classic cocktail bar with an unassuming laneway location. You would only discover it if the concierge showed you the way! Berlin Bar is a great place for its eclectic decor and subdivided room into East and West Berlin, or you could try the swamp room at Gin Palace. I could go on and on in this section so come and speak to me for bar crawl ideas for your evening out.
Where should guests go to listen to a spot of live music in the city?
I like the Irish bars like P.J.O’Brienʼs at Southgate on a Saturday night for some lively entertainment or The Drunken Poet next to the Queen Victoria Market on a Sunday afternoon. Coincidently, The Drunken Poet was rated as one of the top 10 Irish pubs outside of Ireland.
