Local fashion designer and flagship boutique owner Abi Ferrin, longtime outfitter of fashion-forward Dallasites, finds inspiration in unlikely places and creates flattering pieces with all shapes and sizes in mind (visit the Abi Ferrin Flagship Boutique at West Village in Uptown). We caught up with Ferrin about her design aesthetic, her favorite spots in DFW and where you can find some of the best-dressed female servers in the city.
How would you describe the aesthetic of your brand, Abi Ferrin? Abi Ferrin is a brand made for women, by women who want to inspire from the inside out. A simple bohemian elegance, and structured flow is inherent to every piece, and we are all about the fun design details. We engineer our clothes to fit a variety of real women's body types—and our team—full of women, ranging from petite to curvy, who all test-wear the clothes before they go to market to give our feedback before the final garments are sewn.
Who are a few of your favorite or most influential designers? I love the Alexander McQueen line. It fits women beautifully, and is so well constructed and crafted. The attention to detail, and the creativity of these pieces in incredible. I'm also very excited about the social work being done recently by Donna Karan and her aesthetic is beautiful.
Where do you find your inspiration for the clothes you create? I find inspiration in my travels around the world in very unlikely places. I most recently went on a pilgrimage in Peru called Quyllur Rit'i in the Andes Mountains with my Quechuan family. It is a meeting place for the Quechuan tribes and the cultures, traditions and costumes have been preserved for many generations. It was beautiful and inspiring to be a part of this.
What can shoppers expect to find at the sample sale this weekend? Our sample sale will be an awesome opportunity for women to find great Abi Ferrin pieces, at the unheard of starting price of $25 - from one-of-a-kind samples in a variety of sizes, to a variety of other beautiful styles. We have to move on to our next season so it's time for these clothes to find new homes!
What do you love most about Dallas, and where are some of your favorite places around town? I love the supportive women of Dallas more than anything else here. It is one of the few cities in America where women lift each other up, celebrate each other's success and steadily support one another’s ventures and efforts. It is a beautiful thing. My favorite places around town are Parliament for happy hour, where my brother, Charlie Tips, is creating cocktails under the awesome direction of Eddie Lucky Campbell; Shinsei for girls’ dinner, Knife Steakhouse at the Highland and Sissy's Southern Kitchen. (Did I mention that my 3 favorite restaurants all happen to have their female servers decked in custom Abi Ferrin uniforms?)
