State Fair of Texas 2018: Where Culture and Community Collide

The annual tradition returns to Fair Park with Big Tex, animal attractions, midway rides and award-winning fun foods.

The smell of fried food drifts through the air and rumbling rides can be heard all around. As the sun sets, lights from attractions around the park illuminate the night, displaying dazzling colors under a starry sky. A few days away is The State Fair of Texas! With family friendly fun and delicious cooking, it’s time to dive into one of Texas’ most beloved Fairs.

Everything is bigger in Texas, and The State Fair of Texas is no exception. Welcoming guests with a big smile, hat, boots, and standing at 55 ft. tall is a cowboy fondly known as "Big Tex." Since 1952, he’s stood as a timeless icon representing Texas’ resilient and welcoming history. Started 1886, the State Fair of Texas encourages and promotes community, education and the preservation of Fair Park building as a National Historic Landmark. What better way is there to do so other than 24 days of fun? Bring in people from different backgrounds and cultures to create lasting memories.

On opening day, September 28, the ribbon is cut and the festivities begin. Catch special appearances and awards, along with a performance by the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. Enjoy winning foods from the 14th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards. The winning dishes included most Savory: Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake with Jackpot Sauce by Winter Family Concessions. Sweetest dish: Arroz con Leche (Sweet Crispy Rice) by the Garza Family. Most Creative dish: Cotton Candy Taco by Justin & Rudy Martinez.
