Considering a sparkling splurge? Ring the bell at Croghan’s Jewel Box, a refined little shop with exquisite selections. Serving the Lowcountry for over 100 years, it’s the oldest family-owned and operated jewelry store in Charleston, and boasts a menagerie of designer and estate jewelry—vintage and modern settings and stones—antique and new silver, crystal, and unique gifts.
William Joseph Croghan, an artisan hand engraver and jeweler, opened the shop on the side porch of an 18th century Charleston single house. Over the years, the business expanded its merchandise and services to fill the entire building.
Today, William Croghan’s heirs run the charming little jewel box, simultaneously preserving old world charm while introducing many new artisans and designers. Trending brands include Christopher Designs, Elizabeth Locke, Freida Rothman, Henri Daussi, Mazza, Picchiotti, Temple St. Clair, and many fashionable others.
You’ll find an extensive selection of charms, fobs, lockets, pendants, rings, bracelets, brooches, pins, necklaces, earrings, and men’s jewelry too. You can expect the same quality of antique discoveries with more exclusive products, and appraisal services, design studio, and repair workshop offering jewelry and silver restoration and repair, machine and hand engraving.
Of local interest and design is The Goldbug Collection, a jewelry line created by Croghan’s great-granddaughters that gilds the Palmetto Bug—an often unwelcome guest in Charleston—to gold jewelry. Worn with pride by southern ladies, the line takes inspiration from the short story “The Gold-bug,” a nod to its author and former Lowcountry resident, Edgar Allan Poe. The Goldbug Collection is available in over a dozen retail stores across the country.
