Close Encounters

Mummies, Fabergé eggs, French paintings. Soon-to-retire director Gary Vikan has seen a lot during 27 years at the Walters Art Museum, and he’s heard legends like ghostly footsteps of founder Walters. Yet nothing matches his encounter with a certain Roman tomb sculpture (pictured). Here he found rose petals one January 9, the birthday of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Soon, though “Elvis” surely remains, Gary will have left the building.
