Beats With Heart

There’s no denying that Abigail Janssens and Brian Shupe love music. Lucky for Baltimoreans, they channel that passion into their club The 8x10 (10 E. Cross St., Federal Hill, 410.625.2000). Carrying on the tradition of showcasing up-and-comers (the B-52s and Nirvana played early on), the duo books bands from alternative to zydeco. And in a rare move, they encourage fans to record a show (nifty souvenir!). Because “music needs fertile ground for roots to grow,” they also host open-mike nights.

The current line-up includes Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (October 26), Yellow Dubmarine and Subtle Hustle (November 3) and Assembly of Dust (December 1). The tiny venue has no bad sightlines, but regulars arrive early to snag a stool on the second-level balcony. Early birds also get $3 drafts and $2-off cocktails, sometimes served by Shupe himself, a former photog for the Grateful Dead.
