When I was 18, I wrote a postcard to my grandmother from Austria, describing how I slept for free on the porch of a hostel in Innsbruck. While I wouldn't do that now, it's fun to reminisce about my backpacking days.

We’ve all been there—standing on a crowded street corner, arm out for the next taxi, only to have the person beside us jump in the next one that stops. Or worse, waiting on that same street in the rain or snow or scorching summer heat when all the cabs seem full or are nowhere to be seen.

“That was the worst night we can remember, though we do tend to have short memories; that’s why we’re still living on a boat.” So wrote Pat Schulte one morning after a particularly difficult night with his family on a boat, caught in heavy swells and awakening to an engine compartment that was mostly flooded. Stand at the edge of Fisherman's Wharf and look north, and Alcatraz Island is there, a menacing terminus with its concrete prison structure stacked on top of cliffs pounded by the cold and often brutal waters of the San Francisco Bay. Foreboding as it once was when it served as a maximum-security facility, today it's an icon of San Francisco and one of the city's most popular attractions for visitors.

I never expected everything to be so different.

When I left America a few days ago to spend my summer vacation in London, I figured I would be heading to a country quite similar to my own. Okay, not that similar—I do come from an area of the States where it is not uncommon for the younger set to go cow tipping on the weekends (and if you don’t know what that is, it’s probably best that you don’t). But I never imagined I would be entering a world so vastly different than my own.
