Austin Local Living: Pflugerville Independent School District

Pflugerville Independent School District

Located in Northeast Travis County, close to several of the area’s largest high-tech industries, the Pflugerville Independent School District has seen its enrollment more than double over the past decade to about 20,000 students today. That enrollment makes Pflugerville the fourth-largest district in the region. While the major high-tech companies are not within the jurisdiction of the Pflugerville school system, residential communities are springing up throughout the district to provide homes for families moving into the area to be close to jobs in Round Rock and Austin. As a result, the district has backed an aggressive expansion campaign over the past several years that led to the construction of several new schools. Today the district comprises 25 campuses: three high schools, five middle schools, an alternative learning center, 15 elementary schools and a primary school. High school students taking the national Scholastic Aptitude Test have scored above the national average, and several schools within the system have been given Good to Excellent ratings by the TEA. More than 40 percent of the district’s students are listed as economically disadvantaged, and 13.5 percent have limited English proficiency. Pflugerville offers a Spanish bilingual program for kindergarten through third grade. High school students are offered foreign language courses in French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Russian in addition to a core curriculum that includes math, science, and language arts. High school students who desire can choose from among nine vocational programs, or they can choose from among advanced placement courses and honors classes.
