San Francisco Attractions, Tours+Transportation: Angel Island Immigration Station

Angel Island Immigration Station

Nearly 70 years after the “Ellis Island of the West” shut down, the recently refurbished Angel Island Immigration Station on the small island just off the Tiburon peninsula now offers guided or self-guided tours. Leading up to WWII, 1 million immigrants were detained on the island for months, sometimes years, trying to get into the U.S. Humiliating exams and poor, crowded living conditions led many to carve heart-wrenching poems into the barracks’ wooden walls. See detention barracks, interpretive panels and displays, and much more.
