When I was 18, I wrote a postcard to my grandmother from Austria, describing how I slept for free on the porch of a hostel in Innsbruck. While I wouldn't do that now, it's fun to reminisce about my backpacking days.

Villa La Brenta

Off the beaten path just north of Napa, Villa La Brenta boasts volcanic, rocky, hilly soil-superb terroir for red wine production, like the estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The winery's 16th century architecture includes extensive terraces overlooking 65 acres of vineyards and gardens. Tastings and tours open to the public.

A spin-off of the ever-popular Slanted Door restaurant in the Ferry Building, this more casual take on locally loved chef Charles Phan's Vietnamese cuisine offers favorites like the crispy imperial rolls, daikon rice cakes, Dungeness crab with cellophane noodles, braised short ribs and shaking beef. The chic Pacific Heights location serves every meal of the day in a casual and cool neighborhood setting. The Westfield Centre location offers harried shoppers a one-stop source for efficient table service and carry-out.
